Practical Orthopedics & Sports Care for the Primary Care Clinician

49.99$ Instead of 489$

Primary care sees most pediatric MSK complaints first. This fast-paced UCSF course arms you with exam shortcuts, imaging pearls, red-flag recognition, and interprofessional referral pathways so you can manage confidently and collaborate effectively.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify & evaluate common pediatric MSK presentations (scoliosis, limb alignment, fractures, overuse injuries).

  • Differentiate normal variants from pathology (intoeing vs torsional deformity; growing pains vs red flags).

  • Initiate management and know when & where to refer to ortho, sports med, PT, or athletic training.

  • Screen for non-accidental trauma and MSK infection emergency indicators.

  • Promote bone health (nutrition, activity, vitamin D, pharmacologic options) across childhood/adolescence.

  • Guide safe return-to-play after concussion, back injury, and female athlete conditions (REDs, triad).

  • Address disparities in youth sports access, injury care, and rehab resources.

  • Implement a personal continuous-learning & communication plan to strengthen interprofessional teamwork in your community.

10 Clinic-Ready Pearls

  1. Adam’s Forward Bend + scoliometer ≥7° → order standing PA & lateral spine films; refer if Cobb ≥10°.

  2. Physiologic genu valgum/varum peaks age-specific; asymmetric or painful? Investigate.

  3. “Rule of 2s” pediatric fractures: if 2 cortices intact & <2 mm displacement → often safe to splint & re-x-ray.

  4. Sentinel bruising / spiral mid-shaft humerus in non-ambulatory infant = red-flag for abuse.

  5. Limp + fever + ESR/CRP ↑? Distinguish septic arthritis vs transient synovitis with Kocher criteria—don’t delay aspiration.

  6. Calcium 1000–1300 mg + Vit D 600–1000 IU/day baseline for bone accrual; screen teens with stress fractures.

  7. Return-to-impact after pars stress in gymnasts: pain-free, full ROM, graded loading; image only if symptoms recur.

  8. Youth resistance training safe starting age ~7–8 when child follows instruction; focus on form, not load.

  9. Two-step concussion vision screen (smooth pursuit + near-point convergence) detects 70 % of persistent symptoms.

  10. Female athlete triad / REDs: menstrual history + energy availability + BMD—screen at sports physical.
